Brooklyn General Stars Quilt Class — Brooklyn General class led by Melissa Fitzpatrick (@Brooklyn_needlework)

This is a beginner friendly quilting class, although familiarity with a sewing machine is preferred.  You may bring your own machine or use ours.

In this class, participants will learn how to make a crib sized quilt (36”x48”) or a throw quilt (48”x 64”), from start to finish.  The basics of quilting, including accuracy in cutting, trimming and piecing, as well as machine quilting, are just a few of the skills you will be learning over the course of this class.  At the end of the 4 class session, you will not only have an amazing handmade quilt, you will also have the skills and tools to confidently continue on your quilting and crafting journey!

The class will consist of 4 in-person classes, three hours each.  In the first class, we will learn how to prepare and cut the fabric, how to make the basic quilting unit Half-Square Triangle (HST) and we will complete at least one block of the quilt.  The second class will focus on sewing the blocks together to create the quilt top.  In the third class, we will explore the ways the quilt ultimately comes together — in creating a “quilt sandwich” with the top, batting and backing, as well as the actual quilting methods used to finish a quilt.  Finally, in the last class we will complete the quilt by adding the binding.

While this quilt comes together fairly quickly, it is more than likely that the quilters will need to do some amount of work (including cutting, prepping and sewing) outside of class time.  Melissa will be available by phone or FaceTime if folks have questions or need help along the way!
