Workshop: Sewing 101 — Scrunchie Making

Prerequisites:
Absolute beginners are welcome! No previous sewing experience is required.

Class Description:
Learn the basics of sewing and machine operation while making your own scrunchies! This beginner-friendly class will introduce students to the sewing machine and foundational sewing skills, including machine threading, bobbin winding, stitch selection, seam allowance, backstitching, installing elastic, and sewing straight seams.

After learning the basics, students will use their new skills to create their own scrunchies. Participants will have the opportunity to make multiple scrunchies during the class, giving them plenty of hands-on practice while creating something they can take home and wear.

Students are welcome to bring their own pre-washed fabric if they'd like to use something from their own stash. Recommended fabrics include cotton, quilting cotton, linen, lightweight denim, satin, or silk. For best results, I recommend avoiding very stretchy, sheer, or extremely slippery fabrics for this beginner project.

Fabric:

  • 3.5" × 24" of fabric per scrunchie

  • Participants making multiple scrunchies should bring additional fabric in the same dimensions for each scrunchie.

  • BGS-purchased fabric can also be used.

  • Safety pins, or loop turner, or bobkins for turning the fabric
