Want to knit the warmest coziest mittens ever for those blustery New York winter days? Try your hand at the delightful knitting technique Thrumming, that adds an extra layer of warmth to your knits and felts to your hand shape with use making these mittens extra comfy! Thrumming is also transferable to hats, slippers or anywhere else you crave a little extra warmth in your projects. These mittens knit up quickly and make great gifts for any loved ones you want to wrap up in some extra warmth.

We’ll be using Mieka John’s elegant Friesland Mittens pattern which is sized Baby through adult XL, giving you lots of options. Note: for class we’ll be making the Thumb Gusset option of the pattern. 

What you’ll learn in this class:

  • thrumming!
  • twisted rib stitch 
  • Backwards loop cast-on
  • reading charted instructions
  • increases: m1l/r-decreases: knit two together, slip-slip-knit
  • Kitchener stitch


*if you already know magic loop, we can set you up to knit these mittens two at a time Please sign up knowing how to do the following techniques, as we won’t have time to go over these things in class:  

  • a version of small circumference knitting in the round (DPN’s, magic loop, or shorties) *instructor recommends using magic loop 
  • long tail cast on 
  • knit-purl 

We will provide 2oz fiber needed for thrumming. Other materials students should have for class:

  • The Friesland Mittens Pattern by Salt and Stone Knits
  • Aran-weight non-superwash yarn (200 yds)
  • your preferred type of needles for small circumference knitting in the following sizes:
    • Needle A (for twisted rib): Suggested size US 7 / 4.5 mm
    • Needle B (for stockinette with thrums): Suggested size US 8 / 5 mm
      • *If you know you are a generally a tight or loose knitter, size up or down accordingly for your best guess at making gauge. Note that because of the nature of the class, you will not have time to make a gauge swatch for the pattern in class   
      • **If using shorties, you will need an additional set of DPNs/ long circulars to knit the top of the mitten and the thumb.
  • 1 regular stitch marker, 1 locking stitch marker, waste yarn, tapestry needle, scissors

Cancellation/refund policy:  No refunds will be offered within 1 week of class.  Cancellations prior to one week before class are eligible for store credit.  Cancellations are subject to a $10 processing fee and your store credit will be the balance of your class fee.  Your credit is not eligible for refund.  Classes do not include individual Make-up sessions.  If your teacher has offered to schedule a make-up class and you have scheduled to be there and do not show up, then your make-up class is forfeited and will not be re-scheduled.  Visiting teachers' classes are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.  We run these classes based on enrollment...paying in advance for visiting teachers to travel and hold workshops and can not offer any credit for any reason.  Please be sure of your schedule before registering for any class.  Thank you!
